The developing railroads also worked hard during World War II. For 4 years, Azerbaijan Railways sent to the front more than 600,000 tankers and 700,000 freight cars with oil and oil products. \n\t\t\t\t\tIn 1979, with the support of the national leader Heydar Aliyev, the construction of the Agdam-Khankendi railway began. The construction of the railway was supposed to stop the development of Nagorno-Karabakh in the region. The opening of the Baku-Yevlakh-Khankendi railway strengthened the connection between Karabakh and Baku and accelerated the socio-economic and cultural development of Karabakh.
